EDUCATION OF THE WHOLE CHILD THROUGH A CAMP EXPERIENCE Camps began in 1861 in the United States and now exist on six continents. It is estimated that there are camps in as many as 100 countries. Camps may be called by many names: Summer camp, camp education, youth development, children’s rest, outdoor education, vacation plans, or holiday schemes. They may operate during school vacation periods or in partnership with schools and educational institutions. Camps offer education for the whole child. A research study conducted by the American Camp Association in 2004 documents the value of a camp experience. Results confirmed that camps build skills necessary to prepare children to assume roles as successful adults. Parents, children, and camp staff reported growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, making friends, exploring and learning new activities.
